Humans are essentially social beings. As countless novels, films, songs, plays and poems testify, our ultimate happiness and despair is founded in relationships.Satisfaction at work,at play and in family life depends largely on the quality of our friendships and loves.
We experience a large number of relationship in our lives. For many of us,the most important ones will be those wiht our parents and other close relatives. As we grow up,other relationships become important. We make friends,we go to work,we have romantic liaisons, all of these everyday life events involve interpersonal interactions which greatly influence the quality of our lives. We will start by considering affiliation, our basic need to associate with others and then turn our attention to some specific relationships that are likely to be of significance to us.
Friends are people we like and with whom we enjoy doing things. The well known saying,'you can choose your friends but you cannot choose your family',reflects the fact that, unlike kinship, friendship is entirely voluntary.Friendship is universal. As people grow older and marry, friendship becomes less central to their lives and not as close.
The loss of an important relationship is one of the most stressful events in life and has a serious effect on both our physical and mental health.Events likethe death of a close family members or friend are one of the main causes of depression. The effects of divorce are not quite the the same for men and women.Although it is likely to increase depression in men, women often become less depressed once a stressful relationship is terminated, sience they are likely to seek out and obtain a great deal of social support from other relationships, namely from family and friends.
